There is a newsgroup: uk.rec.models.engineering which is worth reading. It's low traffic (4/6 postings per day) and sensible (i.e keeps pretty much on topic), unlike some newsgroups!
There is also a mailing list "Miniature Railways" which is devoted to 7¼ to 15 inch guage lines. This also is a low traffic group.
